But if you’ve got dumpsters down in Brooklyn NY NY, then I am sorry for what I am about to report. Now, I don’t dig the hipster stuff. I like pants that allow circulation to continue below my groinage. I don’t do flannel shirts. And my sunglasses are decidedly terminator and decidedly not blues brothers (although I can rock a fedora). I am not a hipster and this only reinforces the wisdom of this choice for me.

In Brooklyn hipsters are diving into dumpsters for food. No, its true. And No, it isn’t their only option. They could eat like normal people. And they often do. But they have learned the schedule on which grocery stores and snack shops throw away unsought food at the end of the day. While many of these chains do donate large amounts of this food to homeless shelters, what isn’t quite good enough for them goes into the trash—and usually still inside their plastic containers, isolated in their own trash bags.

This does make it less gross, but it is still a problem for the groceries store owners who, while loosing hundreds of dollars of business, are often left with a mess or, at least, feel that they are being made fools of. But, while I appreciate free food as much and more than most people, I would remind these chains that, really, it’s probably the grad students opening other people’s trash bags that look like fools. Jus sayin.
